What, Where, Why
Hopefully, you have researched and started preparing for reality, the events that you could face at any moment or will possibly face because of your geographical location. I know the doomsday, apocalyptic, zombie infested event is a possibility (TEOTWAWKI), The End of the World as We Know it. However, the odds are you will be affected by a natural disaster, power outage or the loss of employment long before you shoot your first zombie.
For most, these events will be relatively short in comparison to a TEOTWAWKI event, from a few days to a year of recovery. Even then, it's not likely to be a wilderness survival ordeal.
Start by preparing for your event, hurricane, snow storm, flood, etc. In my case, we stay prepared for a hurricane with a bug out plan included. This same prep has pushed us through a few flood events, a heavy, unexpectedly hard freeze and some short term power outages where we sheltered in place.
Research, Research, Research
No one resource will have all the information that is right for you and your situation. You'll have to weed through and pick out what works for your budget, special needs and location.
People will tend to dig into the information provided and start piling up supplies as fast as they can read. You'll waste a lot of money this way. On the quick side, get your 72 hour (3 day) essential supplies of food & water. Then shoot for a 7 day supply and come back to reinforce that with your other supplies such as first aid, hygiene, etc. Each time you shop for your regular meal plan, buy an extra meal for your prep storage.
Buy and store items you will actually eat.
Take some time to absorb the information and carefully plan your budget, purchases, storage & organization. Learning a few skills are just as important as buying a few supplies. While you wait to make your next purchase, learn a new skill. Being prepared is about an over all plan of action, not just having a stockpile of food and gear.
Disasters & Other Events
Since there are hundreds of articles already, I'm going to simply provide links from my bookmarks for the different events that may affect your life at some point. These talking points should give you some ideas to think over and to aid in furthering your search for knowledge.
Do not consider any of these complete or finished, there's always more to learn. Preparing for one event may actually prepare you for most.
