Dumpster Diving
I know....this is not for everyone. I personally don't dive, never really even thought much about it until I come across an article and did a little researching. I've known several guys over the years, they pick up scrap metal and recycle it for cash. On trash day, I see a few people riding around picking up items on the curb, I've even put out stuff I thought would be worth something to someone. Then there are those that literally jump off into the dumpsters.
After reading up on it, there is money to be made or saved in this. If you happen to find yourself in need of a little extra cash, it may be worth checking into. For some people, this becomes a pretty lucrative side gig, some it's even their full time job. I worked installing a security lighting system in a large storage facility and become guilty of finding some really good items in their dumpsters. Didn't really think of it as Dumpster Diving at the time, that's exactly what it was.
There's an etiquette to diving and some safety issues too. The links listed below will address this. The laws vary according to local ordinance, the Federal Government does not consider it a Federal offense. Trespassing and nuisance ordinances can be something to research in your locale.
Some of the tips include things like, apartment complexes at the end of the month when tenants are moving, big box stores, warehouse complexes, etc. Some even hit grocery stores and score on food. I'd recommend caution with that, but 'you gotta do what you gotta do'.
Again, this isn't for everyone. In a bind, it's something to research and consider.
